Core Web Vitals are Google’s user-experience metrics. They influence rankings as part of page experience, but more importantly they affect how many visitors stay, read and convert. The good news: most issues come from a short list of causes.

The three metrics

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — how quickly the main content (usually the hero image or heading) appears. Good: under 2.5 seconds.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — how quickly the page responds to taps, clicks and typing. Good: under 200 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — how much the layout jumps while loading. Good: under 0.1.

How to improve LCP

  1. Serve the hero image in WebP or AVIF at the right size, and preload it.
  2. Do not lazy-load images that appear above the fold.
  3. Reduce server response time with caching and a CDN.
  4. Inline critical CSS and defer the rest.

How to improve INP

  1. Break up long JavaScript tasks and remove unused scripts.
  2. Delay chat widgets, heatmaps and tag-manager extras until after interaction.
  3. Avoid heavy work in click and input handlers.

How to improve CLS

  1. Always set width and height (or aspect-ratio) on images, videos and embeds.
  2. Reserve space for banners, ads and cookie notices.
  3. Use font-display: swap with similar fallback fonts.

Measure with real data

Lab tools like Lighthouse are great for debugging, but Google uses field data from real Chrome users. Check the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console and fix templates — not single URLs — for the biggest impact.
