Every extra second of load time costs conversions. The good news: most slow Shopify stores suffer from the same handful of problems, and most of them can be fixed without a full redesign.

Why Shopify stores get slow

  • Too many apps: each app can inject scripts on every page — even pages that do not use it.
  • Heavy media: large hero videos and uncompressed images delay the largest contentful paint.
  • Theme bloat: unused sections, sliders and fonts add weight.
  • Third-party tracking: chat widgets, pixels and review tools stacked together.

Fixes that make a real difference

  1. Audit installed apps and remove leftover code from uninstalled ones.
  2. Replace simple app features (badges, size charts, FAQs) with native theme sections and metafields.
  3. Use Shopify’s image_url filters with proper widths and lazy-load images below the fold.
  4. Preload the hero image and limit custom fonts to two weights.
  5. Load chat and review widgets only after user interaction.

Measure what matters

Focus on real-user Core Web Vitals in Search Console rather than chasing a perfect Lighthouse score. A store that feels fast on a mid-range phone will convert better than one optimised only for lab tests.
