Shoppers searching “men’s running shoes” or “organic ghee 1kg” are ready to buy — and the page that should rank for those searches is usually your collection (category) page, not a single product. Yet most collection pages are just a title and a grid of products.

1. Map one keyword theme per collection

Research the main term and close variations for each collection, and avoid creating several collections that target the same intent.

2. Add helpful copy — above and below the grid

  • A short intro (2–3 sentences) above the products that confirms the shopper is in the right place.
  • A longer buying guide below the grid: how to choose, sizes, materials and FAQs.

3. Optimise titles, URLs and headings

Use a clear H1 with the main keyword, a descriptive meta title and a clean URL like /collections/running-shoes.

4. Control filters and duplicates

  • Keep filter and sort URLs out of the index unless they target real search demand.
  • Use canonical tags to consolidate duplicate collection URLs.
  • On Shopify, link to products via their canonical /products/ URL.

Link to key collections from the main menu, homepage, related collections and relevant blog posts. Internal links tell search engines which pages matter most.

6. Add structured data

Use BreadcrumbList and ItemList or CollectionPage schema, and make sure every product has valid Product schema with price and availability.

Small improvements across dozens of collections add up fast — collection SEO is often the quickest organic revenue win for online stores.
